Har-Tru Tennis Courts

Features: slow pace, slower bounce, softer surface, high maintenance

Har-Tru courts are made of ancient Precambrian metabasalt which is found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. It is a natural green stone that is extremely hard and angular. Thanks to the qualities of the stone, the result is a porous, quick-drying court surface that is easy to maintain and doesn't form water pools in light rain.

The granular Har-Tru surface acts as a shock-absorbing cushion, making it easier on players' ankles and knees. This type of court retains moisture and breathes during the hottest days of summer allowing the surface to remain cooler than hard courts. Har-Tru is an ideal playing surface and offers much easier maintenance and repair than other clay court types.

Hard Tennis Courts

Features: hard surface, medium-fast pace, low maintenance

Hard tennis courts are the most common and most popular choice. Hard courts are made out of a concrete or asphalt base that is coated with an acrylic coating system. This type of court surface is the most commonly available as it’s easy to maintain and is considered a suitable surface for all types of tennis players.

On the hard court, the ball travels at speed faster than it would on a clay court but slower than on a grass court. The bounce of the ball is high and very predictable as the surface is very flat. Preventative maintenance is key when it comes to getting the most out of your tennis court. The primary causes of outdoor tennis court damage ultimately comes down to owners not removing all dirt and debris (including leaves, paper, plastic bags, grass, sticks and more) from their courts during late fall or early winter before the snow is there to stay.

Clean Up Your Court

If you don't take preventative steps during the fall/winter season, you will be negatively affecting your playing experience the following Spring including court aesthetics, player visibility, safety, and the pace of play.

If left on your court for the duration of winter, organic debris such as leaves, weeds, and soil alongside inorganic debris like paper, rocks, and plastic can trap moisture which can cause damage to your court's color coating. Your court is highly susceptible to damage from extended exposure to trapped moisture and may require court recoloring.

Outdoor Tennis Court Maintenance Tips During Cold Weather Seasons

Remove all signs of debris and dirt from your tennis court
Remove the nets, inspect, clean and store them in a dry place that you know is rodent-resistant as rodents love nesting in tennis nets and court windscreens
Do the same with court windscreens as strong winds can cause windscreen failure. If windscreens are left in place, the strong seasonal winds can create significant force and result in structural damage to tennis court fencing

Whether you are building the backyard basketball court of your dreams of deciding on a design for a volley ball court, the size and dimensions are always very important. All fields have different layouts and measurements depending on the type of court you are planning to build.

To figure out how much space is needed for your court you need to consider to whole picture. How much space do you have, and how far would the court be from your house or property lines.

Standard Sizes For Tennis Court Installation & More

Listed here are standard sizes for tennis, basketball, Bocce and pickle ball courts including links to diagrams.

Tennis court – A single tennis court is generally 120’ x 60’ although we have constructed smaller tennis courts to accommodate smaller pieces of property.

Basketball court – A high school basketball court has inbound dimensions of 84’ x 50’

and a NBA size court has the inbound dimensions of 50’ x 94’

Pickleball court – the overall dimensions of a pickleball court are 30’ x 60’

Bocce court – A Bocce court can have many sizes. They typically range from 10’ - 13’ wide and 60’ – 100’ long

Basic Court Maintenance

What kind of maintenance should I be doing to my court?

Because there are many different court types, there are different maintenance procedures for each type of court. R.S. Site and Sports offers maintenance programs for all types of courts.

Hard Courts are typically built with a asphalt or concrete base. These courts can be coated with standard acrylic coatings or with various types of cushion systems. Whether there is a cushion system or not they are almost always coated with acrylic paint. These surfaces should be kept clean from dirt and debris at all times. Regular sweeping or blowing is recommended. We also recommend power washing annually keep court looking and performing as good as possible

Har-Tru courts or "Clay" courts require for regular maintenance. These courts should be swept and watered daily or before play. They also require annual maintenance, often referred to as top dressing. For annual maintenance, the dead material (loose particulates) should be removed, court should be thoroughly scarified and new material added. Any low spots should be filled prior to top dressing. The lines should be re-installed, and the court rolled and swept.

Artificial grass courts are commonly infilled with a special sand. The pile (strands of grass) can become matted down from play on the court. Annual maintenance for these courts can include: The removal of any moss, thoroughly power sweeping the court to stand pile back up and remove debris from the infill, and the application of new sand.
