Whether you’re an avid player or someone who values versatile outdoor space, a tennis court can enhance your property’s functionality, value, and appeal. At R.S.

           1. Elevates Property Value

A well-constructed tennis court adds a unique touch to your property, instantly increasing its market value. Buyers appreciate the added convenience of a private court, particularly in neighborhoods or areas where recreational facilities are considered a luxury.

High-quality courts positively impact not only the aesthetics but also the perception of your property as one that’s tailored for active lifestyles. With R.S. Site and Sports, you can select premium materials, such as post-tensioned concrete or Har-Tru surfaces, ensuring durability and style that elevate your property’s overall appeal.

           2. Encourages Physical Health and Well-Being

Having a tennis court in your backyard provides an excellent opportunity to stay active and healthy without leaving home. Tennis is a full-body workout, improving cardiovascular health, flexibility, and coordination. Plus, playing tennis regularly helps reduce stress and build mental resilience. Whether you’re exercising solo, practicing your swing, or playing doubles with family and friends, a personal tennis court ensures you can prioritize fitness and fun conveniently.

           3. Convenience and Privacy

Imagine skipping crowded public courts and enjoying a match anytime you want, right in your own backyard. A private tennis court eliminates the hassle of securing reservations or waiting for court availability. Whether it’s an early morning session or a late-night game under the lights, this level of convenience can’t be beaten. Privacy is another major advantage. Your space is yours alone to enjoy, making it perfect for honing your skills, teaching the sport to kids, or hosting friendly tournaments without interruptions.

           4. Encourages Family Bonding and Entertainment

A tennis court transforms your property into a hub for recreation and bonding. It’s not just an asset for tennis enthusiasts; it’s a versatile space for family games, fitness activities, or even social gatherings. Tennis courts allow parents to introduce their kids to an exciting sport, and they’re an inviting way to spend quality time outdoors. Additionally, they make your property an ideal venue for entertaining guests, hosting casual matches, or throwing unique events.

Whether you're a homeowner envisioning a private tennis court or a developer looking to add recreational facilities to your property, building a quality tennis court is a significant investment. Tennis courts aren’t just about a flat surface to play on; they’re about craftsmanship, precision, and creating a space that enhances performance while remaining durable. Here are some reasons why partnering with a tennis court contractor can help bring your vision to life.

Benefits of Playing on a Professionally Designed Court

Tennis is more than just a game; it’s a workout, a stress-reliever, and a way to connect with others. However, playing on a subpar or poorly designed court can diminish the experience. Uneven surfaces, poorly chosen materials, or inadequate drainage systems aren’t just frustrating; they can lead to injuries and unnecessary maintenance costs.

A well-designed court enhances your playing experience and ensures consistent bounce, reliable footing, and a polished surface that maintains integrity over time. But achieving this professional-standard quality requires the craftsmanship of skilled tennis court contractors who understand the nuances of construction.

Why Hire a Professional Tennis Court Contractor

Here are the top reasons you should leave your tennis court construction project to the professionals:

           Knowledge of Court Design

Building a tennis court isn’t as simple as pouring concrete. Professional contractors have a deep understanding of tennis court dimensions, slope grading, and surface specifications that meet industry standards like those set by the ASBA (American Sports Builders Association). They take into account factors like player preferences, intended use (recreational or competitive), and even how weather affects the longevity of the materials.

           Access to High-Quality Materials

The quality of materials used in your tennis court significantly impacts not only its performance but also its durability. Tennis court contractors source high-quality materials like post-tensioned concrete for longevity or Har-Tru clay for a smoother, more forgiving surface. They have relationships with trusted suppliers, ensuring you get the best materials that suit your budget and goals.

           Customizable Court Surfaces

One person may prefer the bounce of hardcourts, while another enjoys the slide of clay. Tennis court contractors can customize your court to match your specific needs. Whether you’re leaning toward a Har-Tru surface for authenticity or a post-tension concrete surface for minimal maintenance, they’ll guide you toward the right option.

           Proper Drainage and Surface Longevity

Water damage is one of the most common problems for tennis courts, especially in areas prone to heavy rain or fluctuating temperatures. Professional contractors ensure that courts are engineered with precise grading for perfect drainage, thus avoiding puddles, cracking, and material breakdown over time.

           Cost-Efficiency Over Time

Choosing to cut costs upfront by hiring an unqualified builder or doing it yourself can lead to expensive repairs down the road. A skilled tennis court contractor knows how to build with long-term durability in mind, which saves you from frequent resurfacing or repair expenses. It’s an investment that pays off.

Compliance with Safety & Industry Standards

Tennis court contractors ensure their work aligns with regulations and guidelines. From environmentally friendly practices to proper fencing and court lighting, they handle everything to keep your facility functional and safe, with no legal headaches later on.

           Smooth Project Management

Professional tennis court contractors handle your project from start to finish. From obtaining permits to site preparation, resurfacing, and post-installation clean-up, they make the construction process seamless so you don’t have to worry about the details.

Over time, wear and tear can become apparent, especially on heavily used courts. Watch for these indicators that it’s time to assess your tennis court’s condition:

            Cracks or Surface Damage:

Even small cracks can grow into larger issues, making the court unsafe.

            Fading Colors or Lines:

Sun exposure and use can cause court markings to fade, impacting visibility.

            Standing Water After Rain:

Poor drainage or uneven leveling can lead to puddling, which damages the surface.

            Uneven Playing Surface:

Areas that are no longer flat affect ball bounce and player movement.

           Repair vs Replacement

If your court has minor damage like small cracks or discoloration, tennis court repair or resurfacing may be sufficient. This involves patching up problem areas, recoating the surface, and repainting lines for a like-new look. However, if issues like structural damage, extensive cracking, or sub-base problems are present, full tennis court construction may be a better option to restore functionality. At R.S. Site and Sports, we’ll assess your court and guide you toward the right solution.

Tennis is played on a variety of surfaces including grass, clay, concrete, and many others. Each type of court affects the game style that players should adopt. Each type of court surface also alters the behavior of the ball, the style of the player and some courts require more care than others to remain in good condition.

If you are looking to have a tennis court contractor install a court for you, knowing the pros and cons of the different court surfaces can help you make the best decision for your needs and allows you to budget accordingly for repairs and maintenance.

When choosing the right type of surface for your tennIs court there are three factors to consider - speed, bounce, and ease on players.

            Speed

is how much the surface speeds up or slows down the ball after it bounces

            Bounce

is how high or low the ball bounces after it hits the ground

            Ease on players

is how hard the surface of the court is on the body of the player

         Grass Tennis Courts

           Features:

fast pace, soft surface, high maintenance

Grass is the fastest type of court due to its slippery surface. It presents a tricky surface to play tennis on because it is extremely fast with low bounce. Often players will experience unexpected ball bounce on this court.

Even though grass tennis courts are appreciated for their soft surface and fast pace, they are falling in popularity due to their high maintenance. They must regularly be watered and mowed because they are susceptible to damage from each game play. The bounce of the tennis ball changes depending on all these factors, and proper maintenance of a grass court is more difficult and expensive than other courts.

         Clay Tennis Courts

           Features:

slow pace, high bounce, soft surface, high maintenance

Clay courts are made of hard-packed clay or sand covered by loose clay/sand. Unlike the grass court, because of the grittiness of the clay, it is the slowest surface out there but it also has high bounce and high traction.

Construction of a clay court is less expensive than other types, but maintenance can be time-consuming because the court must be rolled and flattened to eliminate marks and damage from play. The clay's water content is also very important as water keeps the clay court moist, playable and structurally sound. Clay tennis courts are ready for play straight after it rains as the water is quickly absorbed through the surface and into the base.

         Har-Tru Tennis Courts

           Features:

slow pace, slower bounce, softer surface, high maintenance

Har-Tru courts are made of ancient Precambrian metabasalt which is found in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. It is a natural green stone that is extremely hard and angular. Thanks to the qualities of the stone, the result is a porous, quick-drying court surface that is easy to maintain and doesn't form water pools in light rain.

The granular Har-Tru surface acts as a shock-absorbing cushion, making it easier on players' ankles and knees. This type of court retains moisture and breathes during the hottest days of summer allowing the surface to remain cooler than hard courts. Har-Tru is an ideal playing surface and offers much easier maintenance and repair than other clay court types.

         Hard Tennis Courts

           Features:

hard surface, medium-fast pace, low maintenance

Hard tennis courts are the most common and most popular choice. Hard courts are made out of a concrete or asphalt base that is coated with an acrylic coating system. This type of court surface is the most commonly available as it’s easy to maintain and is considered a suitable surface for all types of tennis players.

On the hard court, the ball travels at speed faster than it would on a clay court but slower than on a grass court. The bounce of the ball is high and very predictable as the surface is very flat. Hard court maintenance is straightforward, including pressure washing, brushing, re-painting, anti-algae treatments, and other techniques.

Preventative maintenance is key when it comes to getting the most out of your tennis court. The primary causes of outdoor tennis court damage ultimately comes down to owners not removing all dirt and debris (including leaves, paper, plastic bags, grass, sticks and more) from their courts during late fall or early winter before the snow is there to stay.

If you don't take preventative steps during the fall/winter season, you will be negatively affecting your playing experience the following Spring including court aesthetics, player visibility, safety, and the pace of play.

If left on your court for the duration of winter, organic debris such as leaves, weeds, and soil alongside inorganic debris like paper, rocks, and plastic can trap moisture which can cause damage to your court's color coating. Your court is highly susceptible to damage from extended exposure to trapped moisture and may require court recoloring.

Outdoor Tennis Court Maintenance Tips During Cold Weather Seasons

Remove all signs of debris and dirt from your tennis court

Remove the nets, inspect, clean and store them in a dry place that you know is rodent-resistant as rodents love nesting in tennis nets and court windscreens

Do the same with court windscreens as strong winds can cause windscreen failure. If windscreens are left in place, the strong seasonal winds can create significant force and result in structural damage to tennis court fencing

Cover up the post-hole sleeves with sleeve caps to protect them against any debris and moisture infiltration during the Winter

Ensure that any cracks are filled as this minimizes the opportunity for water to enter and expand the crack during freezing and thawing cycles. (You may opt to hire professionals for this to guarantee that the proper filling material is used and the cracks are cleaned, prepared, and filled correctly)

Specifically for clay courts, we recommend placing a court cover over the court in late fall to minimize the amount of clay loss until the start of the next season

Only use a soft-nylon or hair-type broom for snow removal as hard-bristle brooms can damage your court's textured color surface, creating an inconsistent ball bounce

Do not use snow shovels or mechanical snow removal equipment on your tennis court and never flood your court in winter for use as an ice rink
A very common question that is often asked is, "How big is a tennis court?" or "How big is a basketball court?”

Whether you are building the backyard basketball court of your dreams of deciding on a design for a volley ball court, the size and dimensions are always very important. All fields have different layouts and measurements depending on the type of court you are planning to build.

To figure out how much space is needed for your court you need to consider to whole picture. How much space do you have, and how far would the court be from your house or property lines.

What kind of maintenance should I be doing to my court?

Because there are many different court types, there are different maintenance procedures for each type of court. R.S. Site and Sports offers maintenance programs for all types of courts.

           Hard Courts

are typically built with a asphalt or concrete base. These courts can be coated with standard acrylic coatings or with various types of cushion systems. Whether there is a cushion system or not they are almost always coated with acrylic paint. These surfaces should be kept clean from dirt and debris at all times. Regular sweeping or blowing is recommended. We also recommend power washing annually keep court looking and performing as good as possible

courts or "Clay" courts require for regular maintenance. These courts should be swept and watered daily or before play. They also require annual maintenance, often referred to as top dressing. For annual maintenance, the dead material (loose particulates) should be removed, court should be thoroughly scarified and new material added. Any low spots should be filled prior to top dressing. The lines should be re-installed, and the court rolled and swept.

            Artificial grass

courts are commonly infilled with a special sand. The pile (strands of grass) can become matted down from play on the court. Annual maintenance for these courts can include: The removal of any moss, thoroughly power sweeping the court to stand pile back up and remove debris from the infill, and the application of new sand.
